LASU Managment holds an Interactive Session With Unions and Other Stakeholders

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. ‘Lanre Fagbohun, SAN, Stakeholders and all unions in Lagos State except AASU-LASU during an interactive forum with the LASU management, celebrated Comrade (Chief) Funmi Agnes Sessi, on her emergence as the NLC Chairperson, Lagos branch.

Sessi, A senior member of staff at the Lagos State University (LASU) and member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) was on Thursday, 25th April, 2019 elected as the Chairperson of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos Branch.

The Programme tagged: ‘Interactive Session With Unions and Other Stakeholders in Lagos State University’ was held today at Zendaya Garden Chinese Restaurant, Lagos

The meeting had in attendance, all the Internal and External Unions’ Leaders present. From the University, (NASU, SSANU, NAAT, and the Lagos State Students’ Union) and from the State – all the Unions associated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

During the Vice Chancellor’s opening remark he noted that it was a special day for the University adding that the election of Comrade (Chief) Funmi Agnes Sessi will be used to pass a message.

“What is that we are celebrating? We are here to celebrate a person we so much hold in very esteem.”

“We celebrate you Comrade (Chief) Funmi Agnes Sessi, we are so glad you are a part of LASU, we know you will show the class in this State assignment. The thing you have done in LASU, you will go out and do it all over very well in the State.” The VC said.

While addressing the Union Leaders, he stated that When labour is constructive with the Management both of them will do wonders.

On AASU-LASU absence from the program, the VC stated that “Out of Five (5) Unions in LASU, we have Four (4) including the Students Union in support of the University Management and LASU as a whole, only one is not here”

“There is something to it, the synergy in LASU is electrifying. It is not about the Vice Chancellor, it is not about this Management, it is about LASU”. He added

According to the VC, his administration inherited both the fortunes and challenges at the University.

“The morale of staff and students was low, incessant conflicts, All the income generating programme in the University were dead, School of Part Time was the only one standing. But, 3 years 5months into this administration, not one single local crisis in LASU, what is working for Lagos State University now is the “WE” APPROACH MANTRA and Not I.”

Fagbohun revealed during his address that the best graduating student at the upcoming Convocation Ceremonies of the University is the NAAT – LASU Chairman’s (Comrade Ola – Gbadamosi) son adding that the University will celebrate the young champ.

In response to the NLC chairperson’s question on why ASUU withdrew from the program, the Vice Chancellor said he has extended his hand of fellowship to the Union but it was turned down, ASUU – LASU current leaders chose to be at a distance from the Management.

Sessi appreciated and commended the Management’s determination and commitment towards taking LASU to the next level.

However she urged that all hands must be on deck to ensure that ASUU – LASU is brought back to the table. She encouraged all the unions to continue to deliver on their mandate.

All the Unions leaders in attendance appreciated and commended the University management for extending uncommon gesture to a LASU Staff/Comrade and for recognising all the Unions in the Lagos State.

The Unions made a promise at the meeting to always invite the Vice Chancellor to their events which according to the unions, will be centred on how management should treat their Union members in the various work place adding that they are proud of the VC.
