The much anticipated maiden edition of Professor Folabi Olumide Annual Lecture Series, organized by the Lagos State University Alumni Association, took place on Thursday, 11th April, 2019, and it was worth all the hype that heralded it.

The Annual Lecture Series, which had as its theme: ‘Rethinking Medical Education: An Imperative for Improving Healthcare in Nigeria’, turned out to be not only the first event to be held in the new Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, but a reunion of sort for former officials of the University who had served the institution meritoriously at one point or the other.

The Minister of State for Education, Dr Osagie Ehanire; the first Civilian Governor of Lagos State and first Visitor to the Lagos State University, Alh. Lateef Jakande; the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who was represented at the occasion; former and current Members of the LASU Management were among the dignitaries who joined the LASU Alumni Association to honour the celebrant, Prof. Folabi Olumide and his family, at the occasion.

In his welcome address, the National President, LASU Alumni Association, Major Gen. Cecil Esakhaigbe stated that the Annual Lecture Series in Honour of LASU first Vice Chancellor was significant because it was an opportunity for members of the Association to give back to their alma mater. “Whatever we are today, this university made us.”

The opening remarks by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, SAN, chronicled the remarkable progress made by the institution since its inception. He extolled the starling qualities of Prof. Olumide and the role he played in the University’s story.

“Today, we are gathered to celebrate a man of distinction, the first Vice Chancellor of this university….Prof Olumide is a man of courage who was able to confront the fears that attend every new venture, becoming the pioneer VC of LASU at 47 years of age. It is because of his efforts and that of the great minds that worked with him that a solid foundation was laid for what we have today.”

On his part, the Minister of State for Health and Chairman of the occasion, Dr Osagie Ehanire, expressed his admiration for the Lagos State University thus: ” I am impressed with what I have seen in LASU and I wish this could be a model for other universities.”

The Guest Speaker, Prof Foluso Afolabi Lesi, Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, in his Lecture pointed out that health indices in Nigeria, though improving, are still unacceptably high. He called on tertiary institutions in Nigeria to rethink the way they train the nation’s health sector workers so as to achieve the desired results. He concluded by calling on all present to join Prof Folabi Olumide in believing that “Africa will surely rise again.”

At the end of the Lecture, award plaques were presented to Dr Osagie Ehanire, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Prof Folabi Olumide, Prof Afolabi Lesi and Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.

Highlight of the event was when Prof Folabi Olumide performed some wonderful songs in honour of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, using the piano.
